APQC defines a lessons learned approach as a knowledge sharing activity in which an organization debriefs project or event participants in order to understand what went well, what went wrong, and factors that influenced success or failure. The lessons captured from these activities are then applied to improve processes, reduce risks, and minimize costs.

This article lists measures commonly used to evaluate approaches for identifying, capturing, and applying lessons learned. The list includes a balanced set of measures, from adoption and participation measures to measures of value provided by the lessons learned process/system.
