When we think of KM, we often think of systems. What if we instead looked at people and how human capital is our biggest repository? How do we create an environment of continuous learning by harnessing the collective knowledge of an organization? In 2013, Cisco set out to launch an internally built cloud-based software solution focused on knowledge sharing, collaboration, and formal and social learning aligned with talent development initiatives and personal/team/corporate goals. The program has evolved into MyServices Connect, an open environment for informal learning and knowledge exchange among individuals, work teams, study groups, and others. This article reviews how people talent is built and not bought at Cisco, how Cisco leveraged social and collaborative learning, and how it created an environment of continuous learning.
