Lessons learned is a knowledge-sharing approach that organizations use to capture lessons and proven practices from a project or event. Although the lessons can be applied to improve the project from which they are harvested, they can also be reused more broadly to improve processes and policies, reduce risks, and minimize costs. APQC has identified essential elements that define a successful lessons learned approach. This article reviews those elements and provides descriptions of successful lessons learned implementations at two leading organizations, NASA and Schneider Electric.
