Strategic planning is a complex activity that requires the coordination of numerous critical elements. Laying out the relationship of elements can reveal weaknesses, clarify accountability, and provide a means for keeping an organization focused on its primary objectives.

To help organizations and business units ensure coverage for strategic goals, APQC has developed an Organizational Strategic Alignment Matrix. Completing the matrix is an exercise in ensuring strategic objectives have adequate support through specific strategies, initiatives, programs, projects, and measures. And the completed matrix is an excellent visual tool for all levels of an organization to see the relationship among the goals and activities it is committed to.
