In a time when the fundamentals of human resources and AI technology are colliding in the workplace, understanding that the human impact of HR is more important now than ever before will be essential for leadership teams. In 2026, the traditional view of Human Resources as just "the department that handles paperwork" is officially a relic of the past. Today, HR is the strategic partner that enables organizational growth, protects company culture, and manages the most valuable asset a company has: its people. 

Organizational growth happens when an organization makes the right investments at the right time with the right people. As leaders, you look to your HR partner to not simply fill a seat.  Instead, the challenge is to find the “right-fit” talent that aligns with your company vision.  Effectively doing that process goes far beyond a job posting that search engines love or a well-written applicant intake questionnaire. You can think of it this way…each new hire is an investment made by your company with the average cost to fill a role in the range of $2,000 to $6,000. If you were using your own dollars to fund hiring, would you trust your personal investments to an AI algorithm only and hope for the best?  Of course not! Today’s HR specialists use data-driven recruiting and AI tools to ensure these investments pay off by reducing the risk of a "bad hire" (which can cost up to twice an employee's annual salary to replace), but the human component of the hiring process remains critically important. 

Getting the right people is only half of the battle. Retaining them is just as challenging and arguably where HR professionals shine or burn out. Your corporate culture is the key to retention. Period. There is nothing ChatGPT or Copilot can do to substitute for strong corporate culture. More money, better benefits, promotional opportunities are all part of the retention strategy, too, but I would argue that without a strong culture none of that other stuff truly matters. Emphasis on building (and maintaining) a culture that retains employees must remain a top priority for employers and who better to carry that torch? Well, your HR team, of course! Trained HR professionals are in a unique position of balancing corporate responsibility with the employees’ experience, giving them an important role as the keepers of culture.  

So, you have hired a great fit and you’ve got a strong corporate culture, what’s next for our HR professionals? Put simply… everyday life is next. Our work environments are often the place we spend the most time and our coworkers become extensions of real-life families. Life happens 24 hours a day leaving HR professionals to be ready for literally anything because this is where the real people part happens. So where does AI come into this part of the picture? I would argue that it doesn’t because there is no substitute for a person-to-person conversation where HR professionals can show compassion, brain storm solutions, and endear an employee to the company. I have had the privilege out of seeing this play out thousands of times. After more than 30 years in the people business while raising five children with my husband, I can confidently say that I continue to learn from the coworkers I get to work with and my children who teach me lessons daily. What I always find interesting are the similarities in the lessons that I’m learning. On both sides of that equation, there are lives that I get to impact. On both sides of that equation, there are decisions that I must make that are not always popular, but the right one to make. On both sides of that equation, there are moments of pure joy or deep sadness that can only be managed with a human heart, filled with compassion.  With that said, a day at work sometimes looks exactly like a day at home. Not sure what I mean? Think of it like this…How many of you have survived parenting through the teenage years? If you have, you’ve experienced at least one day that started out with smiles then hit the bottom with a disagreement only to rebound and end with you sending a funny meme and getting a ‘rolling my eyes’ emoji back. Now, think of a challenging day at the office, that tough employee conversation you’ve recently had or the moment when you delivered the good news of a promotion. Did it feel a little like a roller coaster ride with your emotions? I’m guessing you did not turn to AI for a hug? Of course you didn’t. Your HR professional brings a special skill set for handling days just like this! 

So, for those of you keeping score, organizational growth, employee retention, and management of critical human assets are three key reasons to make sure your HR department is packed with rockstars. In addition, HR must be viewed as a profit center and not a cost center. Modern business leaders must recognize that HR is no longer a peripheral support function; it is a strategic partner. By aligning your people strategy with business goals, HR ensures that your company isn't just "getting by"—it is flourishing.

As we navigate the complexities of the 2026 workforce, one truth remains: your organization is only as extraordinary as the real people who power it. And those people need the support, structure, and vision that only a strong HR department can provide.
