In APQC's Transferring and Applying Critical Knowledge study, the best-practice organizations' communities and social networks play a role in defining and documenting knowledge. However, their primary function is in "socializing" the knowledge—in other words, promoting it and making sure it is shared with the right people at the right time to maximize reuse.
