In APQC’s engagement and the employee experience survey, employees shared what they seek most from their employers. Each of the top 10 factors that matter most to employees today are things that managers have the ability to influence and some—such as treatment with dignity and respect, autonomy to perform roles, and manager relationships—are things that managers play an outsized role in delivering. 

In this article, we provide six focus areas for managers seeking to deliver critical components of the employee experience so as to engage and motivate today’s workers to perform their best. At first glance, this guidance may seem simplistic, but successfully delivering on it takes ongoing attention and effort on the part of managers. Managers can revisit this guidance regularly to help them stay on track amidst the many demands on their time and attention.
