What Scarlett Johannson Can Tell Us about the Future of Mobile Technology

“I’ll build a computer and download my knowledge in it,” says Scarlett Johannson in the new movie Lucy. Yes, this is a sci-fi film with a fantastical premise, but when I heard this line my brain went straight to thinking how mobile technology can enable effective knowledge and content management. Let me tell you how I got there.

In the movie, Lucy (Scarlett Johansson) is exposed to a drug that continuously increases her brain capacity, allowing her to attain amazing super-powers and to gain an incredible wealth of knowledge. But the side effect is that she will soon disappear into the space-time continuum. Lucy has vast knowledge but not enough time to share it. So she builds a computer and becomes completely integrated with it. When Lucy disappears, she leaves behind a neatly condensed thumb drive of knowledge content.

Crazy, right? No matter their brain capacity, people can’t become totally integrated with computers to seamlessly capture and share knowledge…or can they? This is where I started thinking about the incredible potential of mobile solutions for content management. Because if there’s any tech tool we humans are already integrated with, it’s our smartphones. How many of us sleep with these mini-computers by our beds? How many of us check them at any given opportunity? And how many of us totally freak out when we can’t find our smartphones?

People say that smartphones can be a distraction at work, but they don’t have to be. Enterprise mobile apps enable an organization to deliver relevant content to employees as soon as they need it, speeding up cycle times for a variety of tasks. Mobile technology can also help people capture and share information in real time regardless of location. APQC’s research finds that firms that capitalize on mobile technology are more successful in their overall content management.

So don’t let your enterprise content and knowledge disappear into the space-time continuum: start thinking about mobile solutions.
