In April, knowledge management (KM) leaders and practitioners from around the globe joined together for APQC’s 19th Annual Knowledge Management Conference. One word in particular kept buzzing around this meeting of over 350 attendees: “conversation.”
APQC CEO Carla O’Dell kicked off the event with her keynote address, which explored APQC’s research on knowledge management approaches to the expert shortage in scientific, technical, and engineering fields. O’Dell encouraged audience members to reach out to people across their organizations and start talking about an integrated strategic approach to leveraging expertise.
Other keynote speakers—including Ed Hoffman of NASA, bestselling author Chip Heath, and Babson College Professor Tom Davenport—emphasized conversation and collaboration as they talked about building more cohesive and value driven KM programs, counteracting biases and making better decisions, and applying analytics in organizations. Leaders from a variety of industries delivered presentations that further fueled discussion.
To wrap the conference, attendees participated in a collaborative café to discuss what they learned and what ideas they would bring back to their organizations. Many groups sketched their conversations visually.
