Turning Assessment into Action: Building a KM Program from the Ground Up
Sonoco’s Global Business Services initiative identified the need for a KM program—but beyond that, there was little guidance. About two months after forming the KM team, APQC’s KM Capabilities Assessment Tool (KM CAT) was used to take a baseline and convert the findings into a phased roadmap tied to business priorities. This session broke down the approach used so participants can adapt the same assessment-to-roadmap workflow when returning to their organizations.
The process demonstrated how results were interpreted, trade-offs were made, and quick wins were prioritized, contributing to a 110% improvement in the KM CAT score from year one to year two. Participants engaged in a short reflection prompt and a hands-on prioritization exercise to identify two or three KM capability areas to tackle first, clarify the “why” behind those choices, and define one next-step action to bring back to their organization.
