Communities and networks continue to play a central role in many organizations, driven by key priorities such as capturing and transferring critical knowledge, advancing KM program maturity, and promoting knowledge sharing practices. While AI technologies are rapidly evolving and reshaping the tools that support communities, the foundational elements of effective communities remain essential.

In early 2025, APQC conducted a survey of knowledge management professionals to evaluate the current state of Community of Practice (CoP) capabilities. The study aimed to confirm established practices and uncover new insights related to program design, implementation strategies, technology support, and the cultural and change management challenges organizations face.
