When APQC surveyed knowledge managers in January 2013, 45 percent of respondents said that knowledge capture, transfer, and reuse was their top priority for the year. The issues are particularly urgent in R&D departments and industries such as oil and gas, chemicals, automotive, and aerospace given the high percentage of engineering and technical staff nearing retirement.

Emergent Systems developed Auros, a comprehensive knowledge managment software platform for engineering-focused organizations. Auros contains functionality for collaboration and expertise management, but its main differentiator is how it analyzes content and knowledge contributed by employees, identifies potential inconsistencies and problems, and delivers relevant know-how as part of the engineering workflow.
