5 Innovations Leaders Believe Are on the Way

A majority of business decision makers want their organizations to do more to embrace modern technologies and new channels of customer engagement and digital experience. That’s one of the key findings presented by the Business Performance Innovation (BPI) Network in its report Accelerating Business Transformation Through IT Innovation: Getting the Business Leader Take on the IT Change Mandate.

This research from the BPI Network, an APQC organization partner, was focused on rating the level of innovation in IT organizations. It found that although nearly 70 percent of global managers surveyed believe technology is now “far more important” to their business, 52 percent of the 250 executives polled rate the level of innovation in their IT groups as poor or just making progress. Moreover, only 42 percent say their IT groups are successful at becoming a more strategic, responsive, and valued business partner.

Expectations are increasing when it comes to where and how transformational technology can impact business performance. Customer-facing innovations are the top three areas in which survey participants see technology improving the business. This includes:

  • Making it simpler and easier for people to do business with the organization
  • Enriching the way the organization interacts with customers and partners
  • Improving the customer experience overall

Survey respondents also indicated the top transformative technologies they believed would create differentiation and business value. As the figure below shows, the Internet of Things was selected by the largest group of survey respondents, followed closely by always on, highly scalable and available Web business models.
