AARP is the nation’s largest nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to empowering people 50 and older to choose how they live as they age. In November 2020, the organization won the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, a presidential-level honor that recognizes exemplary U.S. organizations and businesses. In December 2020, APQC spoke with Joe Pugh (Enterprise Risk Management and Compliance Director at AARP) about the organization’s enterprise risk management (ERM) program and how ERM was mentioned as a key strategic process during the recent Malcolm Baldrige assessment, including:

  • the program’s scope and structure;
  • the organization’s risk assessment processes and practices;
  • ERM activities involving the Board; and
  • lessons learned from building a successful ERM program.
