APQC’s study Managing Project Knowledge examined how organizations with strong project management programs identify skills and insights that contribute to success in almost any project situation, as well as emphasize that knowledge to project leaders. At the portfolio level, APQC found the most universally applicable lessons are incorporated into targeted learning for project professionals. Some organizations cap their project knowledge management efforts by isolating a handful of insights and lessons that are applicable not only to a particular process or type of project but also to project management scenarios across the enterprise. Such efforts usually focus on skills and techniques for leadership, critical thinking, decision making, documentation, and risk management. This article shares examples from two organizations featured in the Managing Project Knowledge study.
