STEM and the Retirement Problem: Why Organizations Aren't Doing Enough

Many organizations say that retirement is a key factor driving their need to grow and leverage scientific, technical, engineering, and math (STEM) expertise. But APQC finds that firms are struggling to take action to prepare for what the oil and gas industry refers to as the "great crew change." This article highlights APQC's research on the retirement problem within STEM fields through comparison with another key driver of the need to develop STEM talent: rapid changes in knowledge and technology domains important to organizations. The conclusion of this article points to strategies and approaches that leading firms are using to prepare for the mass retirement of long-tenured experts.
