Selecting Participants for Workplace Mentoring

Once an organization identifies the business purpose it wants to achieve through mentoring and settles on the basic design of its mentoring program, the next step is to decide which employees will participate as mentors and mentees.

As a general rule, the organizations featured in APQC’s Workplace Mentoring research workplace aim to make mentoring participation as inclusive as possible, such as in situations where the business purpose of mentoring is career counseling, relationship building, and/or soft skills development. However, when mentoring is designed to transfer discipline- or job-specific knowledge, the organizations are more selective regarding who can participate.
