Product lifecycle management (PLM)—the process of managing the entire life span of a product from idea generation, through design and development, to production, to service in the field, and ultimately disposal—integrates people, processes, and technologies across the enterprise.

Based on APQC research and direct client experience, this article outlines the typical roles an organization needs for successful PLM and the responsibilities for this critical process. The descriptions included are relevant for organizations moving from a decentralized PLM model to a centralized PLM model. Modifications may be needed based on an organization’s unique structure and strategy.
