Determining the right mentor for an employee can be a tricky task. For example, should mentors be subject matter experts in their respective fields? Do employees learn best from colleagues in similar career paths, or is it better to pair them with mentors from different functions who can give them a fresh perspective? The organizations featured in APQC’s Workplace Mentoring research use a range of different techniques to match mentees with the right mentors. However, a common thread across mentoring programs is that almost all give mentees a say in the pairing process.
