In early 2021, Winter Storm Uri caused one of the largest power blackouts ever in the United States. Whereas other regions are built to handle a seven-day hard freeze, this storm exceeded the Texas systems’ stress capacity levels, prompting a nationwide re-evaluation of how risk is assessed. This articles discusses the different types of risk, how to respond to expanding risk, and reassessing ERM fundamentals in the utilities industry.
