Shepley Bulfinch had a well-established practice of one-on-one mentoring but wanted a more systematic approach to capturing and transferring knowledge. The organization does not have a structured KM program, so its CIO led the implementation of a series of experiments in knowledge transfer approaches including expert interviews, ethnography, and even virtual reality.

At APQC's 2018 KM Conference, Jim Martin described the results of Shepley Bulfinch’s experiments in knowledge transfer and offered key takeaways on how to design similar experiments.
