APQC's Transformational Change-Making it Last Best Practice Report found that best-practice organizations typically use a centralized team to manage their transformational change initiatives. The study also demonstrated that inclusion of PMOs, change management experts, and/or project managers in the centralized management team ensures the transformation includes the necessary project and change management skills for effective roll out and long-term adoption.

To better understand what contributes to PMOs assignment to transformational change initiatives, APQC conducted correlation analysis on data from its recent survey, Defining Characteristics of Next Generation Project Management Offices. This article identifies the key transformational change responsibilities of the PMO as well as what aspects of the PMO play a statistically significant role in determining if the PMO will support transformational change initiatives.
