Forecasts provide visibility, enabling organizations to see what challenges and possibilities lay ahead. Companies should forecast as far forward as is necessary to enable them to react when their environment changes. Instead of seeking visibility through their forecasts, however, 49 percent of APQC’s planning and forecasting research participants are using their forecasts to evaluate whether they will hit the year-end targets previously agreed to. This is a change in the underlying fundamental approach of forecasting from making decisions for forward action to evaluating a group’s perceived past performance.
