One of the best practices featured in APQC's study New Product Development: Embracing an Adaptable Process is to identify a clear process owner for NPD. The uncertainty of the success of new products should be the result of the products themselves, not the process used to develop them. Formalizing ownership for the NPD process goes a long way toward ensuring organizational consistency and removing guesswork for project teams.
Even more important is how this role is put into action. The questions become: What does this process owner or manager do? How does this role play out?
