As the United States steel industry changed over the past few decades, Mueller Inc. transformed its business strategy and structure to adapt to a new environment. Process standardization allowed the organization to successfully implement a fully integrated ERP system. Mueller went from a business unit-centered budgeting and planning strategy to an organization-focused system that held each location responsible for its own performance using a balanced scorecard. Regular planning meetings, open communication, customized technology adapted to the organization’s needs, and a strong company culture all contribute to a strong FP&A function at Mueller.
