Project management offices (PMOs) are moving beyond typical project management activities, and are now providing more strategic insights and services that support enterprise-wide initiatives. APQC conducted a survey to assess the new roles PMOs are playing within organizations and to understand the key characteristics (structure, responsibilities, and skills) necessary to provide strategic support.

Survey respondents were asked to indicate if their PMO was a) currently responsible for, b) not responsible for but will be in the next three years, or c) do not plan to be responsible for 18 potential PMO responsibilities. This article discusses not only what PMOs are currently responsible for but also where they see themselves in the near future.
