Using metrics from APQC’s Open Standards Research database, this report shows that financial management work performed within a shared services model is done faster, better, and cheaper than that done at business units or headquarters. Going further, we argue that a shared services operating model by itself is not enough. Without a steady commitment to sustainable top performance—a push for excellence that touches everything from staff training to the application of IT innovation—the shared services director will eventually flounder.
Leaders in financial shared services understand that achieving excellence means doing more than delivering business services at the lowest possible cost. They embrace best practices—many of which are documented here—to ensure that they can deliver true value to their customers and support the overall enterprise strategy.
