Growing up, I spent a lot of time watching baseball and sports movies. One of my favorite movies was Field of Dreams and I can still remember hearing Shoeless Joe say, “If you build it, he will come.” Those of us who’ve seen the movie recall that it wasn’t an easy feat to build a baseball field in the middle of Iowa when resources were scarce and people didn’t understand why a baseball field made sense.

Knowledge management (KM) is a bit like building a baseball field in the middle of Iowa. It’s exciting and thrilling, yet filled with unknowns.

How to Overcome Barriers to KM Engagement Through Storytelling

I remember the first time I watched a TED talk. I was mesmerized by the story, wondering who this person was and how they kept me curious, attentive, and engaged. The speaker masterfully wove together a personal vignette and linked it with a broader theme to captivate my attention. My emotions were captured, I was transported into another person’s world, and above all, I was now an advocate for this way of learning and communicating. Years later, I can’t remember who it was or the topic discussed, but I remember how I felt.
